There’s something about being in the tropics that inspires a brazen combination of colours. Besides, when one invests in a hotly hued pump, one finds every reason to play with colour. Since these Dior pumps entered my life about a year ago they’ve been giving me reason after reason to be bold. I paired them with a red dress on my birthday last year and was delighted to see this spring’s Dior runway prominently feature that palette of red and pink in tandem. When my friend and I went out to dinner earlier this month of May in Cartagena, Colombia, it was more the dress that spoke to me than the shoes. This dress by Maje reminds me much of an Alaïa, but at a fraction of the cost and the hoop skirt in particular is redolent of the McQueen dress (here) I pined away for last autumn. I slipped (read squeezed) into the dress as we rushed to get ready to dine at Don Juan. “What shoes?”, I thought, looking at the time. Well, since I had seen flowers of a similar palette blooming over balconies in the bustling walled city-center, I thought, why not orangey-red and hot pink?
